Build and deployment of server based application software has always been a very labor intensive and error prone process. Particularily if you need to deploy to a large number of servers and/or to different platforms.
Writting scripts, maintaining variables, and getting the right source code version into the build can be challenging indeed without automation.
The solution in most shops is to write semi-automation scripts in ANT or Perl or another scripting language.
BuildForge does not write the scripts for you, it provides a frame work to manage the build process steps. It provides process access and security by role and organization.
Before I go on forever let me know if you have an interest in this topic and I'll write more.
If you have questions you can respond to this post.
